This August, Jumeirah Carlton Tower in Knightsbridge, London, is launching a new themed afternoon tea experience that promises to be a must-visit for anyone with a penchant for British tradition and royal elegance. Located just a stone’s throw away from Sloane Street’s renowned designer boutiques, the hotel provides an ideal setting for a luxurious afternoon after a morning of high-end shopping.

Royal Inspiration for Jumeirah Carlton Tower’s Afternoon Tea

The new afternoon tea, available daily from 12 pm to 4 pm, is inspired by the iconic Highgrove House & Gardens, the cherished retreat of His Majesty King Charles III. Launching with Afternoon Tea Week on August 12, this seasonal and botanically inspired experience features creations by Executive Pastry Chef Martin. The tea champions sustainability and seasonality, utilizing locally sourced British produce to create a menu that pays homage to Highgrove.

Dubai’s culinary scene continues to flourish with the arrival of TOTÓ, an Italian-Mediterranean restaurant backed by global icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal. Located in Downtown Dubai at Hotel Boulevard, Autograph Collection, just across from the iconic Dubai Fountain, TOTÓ promises to bring the flavours and flair of Italian cuisine to the city’s vibrant dining landscape.

TOTÓ: A Taste of Italy with a Touch of Cinema

TOTÓ is, in essence, a celebrity restaurant that takes inspiration from the golden age of Italian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. The restaurant’s décor is smart, with walls adorned with cinematic stills that transport diners to the charm and elegance of classic Italian film. The ambiance is designed keeping in mind Italian sleek aesthetics while offering a modern twist on traditional Italian dining.

This Dubai location is the latest in a series of ventures by Ronaldo and Nadal, following the opening of TOTÓ Madrid in 2021 and TOTÓ Abu Dhabi in March 2024. The Dubai branch aims to continue the legacy, offering a curated menu that blends Italian culinary traditions with Mediterranean influences.

At the helm of TOTÓ’s kitchen is Chef Angelo Santi, known for his mastery of Italian cuisine, and Pizzaiolo Chef Vincenzo Palermo, a specialist in crafting authentic Italian pizzas. Together, they have created a menu highlighting the best Italian flavours, prepared with precision and passion.

TOTÓ’s menu offers a variety of dishes that cater to both casual diners and culinary enthusiasts. For starters, guests can enjoy the Crostini al caviale—toasted bread layered with rich burrata cheese and topped with Tradition Prestige caviar. Another must-try appetizer is the Carciofi alla carbonara, featuring charcoal-braised artichoke flowers with duck carbonara, offering a unique twist on a classic dish.

For pizza lovers, the Tonno Rosso is a standout. This pizza is topped with mozzarella from Napoli, Delfino Battista red tuna, yellow datterino tomatoes, capers, and red onion, providing a delightful blend of flavours. Meat lovers will appreciate the Controfiletto di wagyu, a grilled wagyu striploin served with crispy potato dices and finished with freshly grated black truffles.

To end the meal on a sweet note, the Burrata Cheesecake is a must-try dessert, served with honey-infused ice cream and topped with honey sauce and honeycomb—a dessert that balances rich and delicate flavours perfectly.

From 5 pm to 8 pm, TOTÓ offers a unique selection of Italian-inspired drinks, each paired with complementary chef’s bites. The drink menu features the Aurea Gran Rosé from Frescobaldi, a selection of classic cocktails, and Mediterranean-inspired beverages, all setting the perfect mood for a relaxing evening. Additionally, TOTÓ boasts a well-curated selection of Italian wines.

It’s worth noting that TOTÓ is not Ronaldo and Nadal’s first culinary venture in Dubai. A few wee ks prior, the duo launched Tatel Dubai next door, offering traditional Spanish cuisne. With these two establishments, Ronaldo and Nadal have created a dynamic dining duo in one of Dubai’s central locations. ◼

Bangkok’s bar scene just got a whole lot funkier with the opening of F*nkytown, a new cocktail bar that’s stirring up the city’s nightlife with its unique concept. Located on Sukhumvit 37, this old-school disco-inspired bar spans the 4th and 5th floors, complete with a rooftop alfresco area in the heart of bustling Phrom Phong.

Behind F*nkytown’s innovative approach is a team of seasoned professionals. Group Beverage Manager Pae Ketumarn leads the bar, whose award-winning career includes stints at two of the World’s 50 Best Bars – Sober Company in Shanghai and The SG Club in Tokyo. In the kitchen, Chef Theo Tomasa, formerly of The Connaught and Annabel’s in London, collaborates with Group Head Chef Luqman Hakim Hamzah, Sarnies Group, to create a menu that’s as funky as it is flavourful.

F*nkytown’s signature is its funkiness scale, ranging from 1 to 5, allowing guests to choose their drinks and meals based on their adventurousness. This scale is a creative way for patrons to explore and experience big flavours, with drink names and flavours mimicking food in a funky liquid form.

Funkytown Bangkoks Fresh Spin on Cocktail Culture

Funkytown Bangkoks Fresh Spin on Cocktail Culture

The drink menu at F*nkytown is a journey through taste and creativity. For instance, the Tokyo Banana, with a funkiness level of 2, blends miso butter, Haku vodka, banana, white cacao, lemon, and egg white. More adventurous drinkers might opt for the Caesar Salad drink, rated 4 on the funkiness scale, featuring caesar cordial, Widges ecoSpirits gin, parmigiano foam, romaine lettuce, tomato, lemon, and tonic. The Som Tum, at the top of the scale with a funkiness of 5, is a daring mix of som tum cordial (spicy), Roku gin, fish sauce caramel, honeyed wine, and dried shrimp.

F*nkytown also offers twisted takes on classic drinks, like the Cold Brew Martini with coffee kombucha, Plantation 3 Stars ecoSpirits rum, Mr. Black cold brew liqueur, and jasmine, and the Sundae Old-Fashioned, featuring red beans, Suntory Chita whiskey, kinako, black sugar, and hinoki bitters, both at a funkiness level 3.

The food menu is equally inventive, with bite-sized snacks like the Hamachi Crudo Tart, Crispy Pig’s Ears with fermented spicy durian sambal, and the savoury Bone Marrow Canele. For larger plates, the Jasmine Wagyu is a standout, featuring grain-fed Thai wagyu striploin with miso-yuzu bearnaise, sourced from N.Nuea, a local premium-grade wagyu farm.

F*nkytown’s ambience is completed with funky music playlists covering funk, soul, R&B, and 80s disco, and live DJs spinning from Thursdays to Saturdays. This new venture by the Sarnies Group is their first foray into the cocktail bar concept, and it’s already raising the question: Is this funky enough for Bangkok’s vibe?

In the southern area of Catalonia, nestled amidst the sun-drenched landscapes of the Spanish countryside, lies Penedès – a region synonymous with wine, tranquillity, and a unique philosophy of life. My first steps into Penedès were like walking into a painter’s masterpiece – in vibrant green and gold hues, dotted with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.

I was here for a wine-tasting escape, but little did I know I was about to embark on a journey through history, culture, and an unparalleled philosophy of living. Known as one of Catalonia’s most famous wine regions, Penedès offers an immersive experience into the world of wine, steeped in history and natural beauty.

Spain’s Penedès: A Historical Wine Haven

Dating back to the 7th century BC, Penedès’ wine-growing tradition has been honed over centuries. Today, the region is a testament to this enduring legacy, boasting 37,500 acres of grape-producing land. The vineyards, scattered across the picturesque Catalonian countryside, are dotted with quaint villages, solitary churches, and, of course, the sprawling vines that are the region’s lifeblood.

A boutique vineyard in Penedès

The complicated geography of coastal hills and various soil types in Penedès contribute to a diverse range of wine styles. There’s no ‘typical’ wine from Penedès; the region offers a spectrum from full-bodied red wines and the freshest white wines to excellent sparkling wines and whites. Grape varieties such as Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada are traditional to the region, but you’ll also find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat gracing the vineyards.

Penedès is perhaps best known for producing Cava, Spain’s most famous sparkling wine. Cava, which enjoys its own appellation, is primarily made in this region. The sparkling wine has become synonymous with celebration and sophistication in Spain and globally.

With over 70 wineries ranging from small, family-run operations to internationally recognized brands, the region offers a plethora of options for wine enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the best vineyards and cellar doors, indulge in wine tasting and tours, and enjoy the local produce. The passionate winemakers and the folks running these establishments add a personal touch, making each visit unique and memorable.

The Penedès Wine Route

Since 2001, the Penedès wine route has been part of the Rutas del Vino de España (Wine Routes of Spain), inviting visitors to explore the region’s viticultural richness. The route encompasses wineries under denominations of origin like DO Penedès, Corpinnat, DO Cava, and DO Penedès Espumoso. Each of these appellations represents a different aspect of Penedès’ wine heritage, showcasing the region’s versatility and quality.

A Gastro Lifestyle Intertwined with Wine in Penedès

In the sun-drenched vineyards of Penedès, the essence of the region extends beyond the vine. It’s an immersion into a lifestyle where gastronomy and viticulture intertwine seamlessly, creating a tapestry of experiences that celebrate the richness of Catalan culture.

The gastro lifestyle in Penedès is as varied and rich as its wines. Catalan cuisine, known for its bold flavours and rustic charm, is a feast for the senses. One cannot talk about Catalan food without mentioning its olive oil – golden, fragrant, and a staple in every kitchen. This liquid gold drizzled over local dishes adds a touch of Mediterranean magic.

Cheese lovers are in for a delight with the variety of Catalan cheeses. Tupi, a spicy and tangy cheese made from sheep, goat, or cow’s milk and flavoured with aniseed liquor, is a traditional favourite. It’s typically prepared in clay pots and is known for its intense flavour. Then there’s Mato de Montserrat, a fresh cheese enjoyed young, often paired with honey or jam for a sweet and creamy dessert. The Alt Urgell-Cerdanya cheese, the first to receive a D.O. designation in Catalonia, is another must-try. Made from pasteurized cow’s milk and aged for 45 days, it has a semi-soft texture and a grassy and nutty flavour profile.

The region is also famous for its embotit-cured, dried sausages that are a testament to the art of Catalan charcuterie. Each bite of these sausages, whether enjoyed alone or with a glass of local wine, tells a story of tradition and craftsmanship.

Penedès is a place where dining is an experience. Here, you can spend afternoons lounging on a terrace, a glass of wine in hand, and evenings savouring the local produce. The aromas from the marketplaces, the conversations with local winemakers, and the rural social life all contribute to the charm of this region.

To truly experience Penedès is to indulge in its gastro offerings. From the vineyards to the dining table, every flavour, aroma, and texture celebrates the land and its bounty. It’s a region where the love for food and wine creates a symphony, and each day spent here adds a note to its melody.

As my journey in Penedès came to a close, I realized this was more than a getaway; it was a deep dive into a lifestyle where wine, nature, and history coexist harmoniously. I left Penedès with bottles of exquisite wine, stories, memories, and a newfound appreciation for the art of winemaking. In Penedès, every glass tells a story, and I was fortunate to have become a part of it. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply someone seeking a serene escape, Penedès promises an enriching Spanish journey that captivates both the palate and the soul. ◼

This tropical sanctuary brews a captivating secret, the crafting of luscious lychee wine. This unexpected delight symbolizes the island’s inherent ingenuity, inspiring us to discover beauty and find luxury in nature’s bounty.

Generations of inhabitants have nurtured the growth of lychees on this sun-kissed island. The fruit, when bathed in sunlight and ripe with maturity, is harvested with a careful touch. This cautious curation sets the stage for the lychee’s transformation from simple fruit to elegant wine, epitomizing the luxurious essence of Mauritius.

The Mauritian lychee wine, with its balanced interplay of sweetness and acidity, paints a gastronomic landscape of the island. Its floral bouquet and unique flavour profile grace the island’s eclectic culinary offerings, harmonizing with the ocean’s freshest catch and soothing the fiery nuances of Asian spices.

Nestled amidst the verdant fields and gentle slopes of Mauritius, Takamaka Winery exemplifies the art of wine-making. Known for their luxurious lychee wines, each bottle at Takamaka represents a story of passion and craftsmanship. The result is an exquisite selection, from the off-dry ‘Aquarel’, a melody of tropical fruits and citrus, to the sweeter ‘Eclipse’, gently echoing the scent of white flowers and juicy peaches.

Gastronomic Getaway in Strasbourg: An Experience That Nourishes the Soul and Satiates the Palate. Nestled along the meandering Rhine, Strasbourg, the vibrant Alsatian capital, stands as an unsung hero in the world of gastronomy. Its culinary tableau, a fascinating blend of French finesse and hearty German simplicity, reflects its rich historical tapestry and unique geographical placement. Away from the ubiquitous charm of Paris and the sun-drenched allure of the South, Strasbourg offers an enticing gastronomic getaway that truly encapsulates the essence of French living.

Strasbourg’s streets, framed by storybook half-timbered buildings and traversed by the serene Ill River, serve as an enchanting backdrop to its food narrative. The city exudes an atmosphere where each cobblestone seems steeped in the aroma of tradition, and each winding alley holds an epicurean secret. This is Strasbourg, a city where gastronomy is not merely an aspect of culture but the pulse that keeps its heart beating.

Culinary Excellence: A Journey Through the Alsatian Plate at Strasbourg

When it comes to Alsatian cuisine, simplicity is its charm, and the flavours are as diverse as the Alsatian landscape itself. Robust, meaty dishes dominate the menu, from bretzels and sausages to the famous ‘Choucroute garnie’, a cornucopia of smoked pork, sausages, and other meats served atop a bed of sauerkraut. The Strasbourg sausage, a symbol of the city’s gastronomic prowess, is a revelation of culinary craftsmanship, while ‘Tarte flambée’ — a thin, crispy flatbread topped with creamy fromage blanc, onions, and bacon — epitomizes the Alsatian penchant for hearty comfort food.

Yet, Alsatian cuisine is about more than just the savoury. The region’s bakers and patissiers have been perfecting the art of sweet indulgence for centuries. Kugelhopf, a subtly sweet, crown-shaped yeasted cake studded with raisins and almonds, and glazed with a delicate sugar coating, is a must-try.

Gastronomic Landmarks: The Iconic Restaurants of Strasbourg

Strasbourg is a gastronomic wonderland dotted with eateries that range from quaint taverns to Michelin-starred restaurants. The historic ‘Maison des Tanneurs‘, situated in the picturesque Petite France district, has been offering traditional Alsatian fare since 1949. ‘Restaurant Le 1741‘, with its stunning wine cellar, offers an immersive gourmet experience from the coveted chef’s table. Another gem is ‘Chez Yvonne‘, a wine pub that dates back to 1873 and offers a journey into Strasbourg’s culinary past.

The presence of many other noteworthy eateries enriches the city’s culinary scene. The quaint ‘Au Pont Corbeau‘ offers a rustic charm and an enticing menu filled with Alsatian classics. For a dash of luxury, ‘La Fourchette des Ducs‘, a two-Michelin-starred establishment located in the nearby town of Obernai, helmed by Chef Nicolas Stamm-Corby, and pastry chef Benjamin Mornay, is worth the detour.

For a contemporary twist on traditional Alsatian cuisine, ‘Le Pied de Mammouth‘ is a delightful pit-stop, offering burgers crafted from locally-sourced ingredients. Mireille Oster, the gingerbread maker of Strasbourg, offers a sweet interlude with her bakery’s variety of gingerbread creations.

Fresh from the Source: Strasbourg’s Bustling Food Markets

One cannot overlook the importance of Strasbourg’s bustling food markets. They are the lifeline of the city’s culinary circuit, offering a range of local products, including an assortment of cheeses and cured meats. Marché Cronenbourg is particularly noteworthy, teeming with vibrant colours, aromas, and flavours that encapsulate Strasbourg’s gastronomic spirit.

Of course, no food adventure in Strasbourg would be complete without savouring local cheese delicacies. Bibeleskaes, a luscious white cheese made from curd mixed with fresh cream, is a must-try for cheese lovers. Its velvety texture and mild flavour make it a versatile addition to any Alsatian meal.

Additionally, Strasbourg is home to an array of speciality food shops. One such gem is the ‘Maison Kammerzell‘, a venerable institution of Strasbourg known for its traditional Alsatian cuisine served in an iconic half-timbered house.

Another cherished dining spot is ‘Restaurant l’Ami Schutz‘, located in Petite France. Offering an exceptional terrace on the water’s edge, this establishment is best known for its exquisite fish sauerkraut.

Among the bakeries that dot the city, ‘Au Pain de mon grand-père‘ and ‘L’Atelier 116‘ stand out, offering a medley of baked goods that are a testament to Alsatian baking traditions.

Alsatian cuisine would be incomplete without its wines. The region’s sun-drenched vineyards produce some of the finest white wines, from crisp Rieslings to aromatic Gewürztraminers, providing the perfect accompaniment to the local fare.

Celebrating Alsace: A Tapestry of Taste and Tradition at Strasbourg

In essence, Strasbourg presents an all-encompassing gastronomic journey that lingers in memory long after the plates are cleared and the glasses are emptied. It’s not merely about the food; it’s about the experience of dining — the ambience, the tradition, the creativity, and most importantly, the sense of community that food fosters.

So, the next time you think of a gastronomy getaway, let the path lead you to Strasbourg. It’s not just a city; it’s an experience that nourishes the soul and satiates the palate in equal measure. This sojourn into the heart of Alsatian culture is a feast not just for the taste buds, but for the senses, where each bite is an exploration into the rich tapestry of Strasbourg’s remarkable cultural, historical, and gastronomical heritage.
